Have you ever picked up a tarot deck and thought, where on earth do I start? You’re not alone. Tarot can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but with the right approach, it quickly becomes a powerful tool for insight, guidance and self-discovery.

At Glow by Amber, I believe tarot should be fun, approachable and empowering. Whether you want to read for yourself or others, this beginner-friendly guide will get you shuffling with confidence.

1. Choose a Deck That Resonates with You

Tarot decks come in all styles—from classic Rider-Waite to dreamy, artistic designs. Pick one that visually and energetically resonates with you. If the images spark emotion or curiosity, that’s a good sign it’ll work for your intuition.

2. Get to Know the Deck

A tarot deck has 78 cards split into two groups:

  • Major Arcana (22 cards): Big life themes and spiritual lessons. Also known as The Fool's Journey.
  • Minor Arcana (56 cards): Day-to-day events, emotions and experiences. Split into 4 suits: Cups (emotions/feelings), Wands (action/creativity), Swords (thoughts/mental) and Pentacles (material world/money).

3. Start with a Simple Spread

No need to dive into the complex Celtic Cross layout just yet. Try a simple 1-card or 3-card spread:

  • 1-card pull: "What do I need to know today?"
  • 3-card spread: Past | Present | Future or Situation | Challenge | Advice

Keep it relaxed and trust what comes up.

4. Use Your Intuition - Go with Your Gut

Reading tarot isn’t about memorising every meaning in a book. It’s about tuning into your inner knowing. Look at the image, colours, symbols and the feeling it gives you. What message is the card offering you in this moment?

5. Keep Note of Your Readings

Keep a tarot journal to track your insights and patterns. Write down:

  • The question you asked
  • The card(s) you pulled
  • What you felt and interpreted

Over time, you’ll deepen your connection and build your own library of meanings.

6. Be Patient - You Won't be an Expert Overnight

Like any practice, reading tarot takes time. You’re not expected to be perfect. The more you practice with your cards, the more confident you’ll become.

Final Thoughts

Tarot is a beautiful way to tune into your intuition and receive spiritual guidance. With a deck you love and a curious heart, you're well on your way to reading with clarity and confidence.
